FAQ

From how Spatial Mods works to how to add augmented reality (AR) to any personal or professional project, we endeavor to answer your questions here.

Most AR tools require coding, 3D modeling, or technical production skills. Spatial Mods requires none of those. If you can shoot a video, take a photo, and upload a file, you already know how to use Spatial Mods.

The result is the same immersive experience your audience expects from AR, delivered through a process that takes minutes, not months. No development team. No specialized software. No learning curve.

AR has been shown to increase engagement, time spent with a brand, and conversion. Spatial Mods makes that accessible to anyone.

Five steps take you from sign-up to a live AR experience.

Register as a new user. Create a new campaign and load your video. Load your base image, any printed material you already have, packaging, posters, business cards, or brochures. Your campaign is now live. Share it by letting your audience know to download the free Spatial Mods viewer, available on iOS and Android, and scan your printed material to activate the experience.

From your dashboard you can monitor every deployed experience in real time. Engagement data, scan activity, and performance analytics for each campaign are all in one place.

That is the complete process. No coding. No production crew. No specialized software.

Have your audience download the Spatial Mods viewer [link] to their device. From the opened viewer, they only need to scan your product image to activate your content. The use of Universal Icons helps train your audience to immediately know there is an AR experience ready for viewing.

The viewer is how Spatial Mods delivers its most valuable capabilities, and it is worth understanding what it actually unlocks.

Analytics. Every scan generates data. Who engaged, when, for how long, and with which campaign. For brands accustomed to print and physical media, this is like turning on the lights in a room you did not know was a warehouse. Information that was never accessible before becomes available at scale, post-deployment and post-purchase.

Infrastructure. Brands do not need to invest in costly video or AR playback systems. Your audience already carries the viewer in their pocket. That dramatically reduces the capital investment required to bring AR into any campaign or product experience.

Brand Control. For larger organizations, Spatial Mods offers a white-label product that keeps every visual engagement focused exclusively on their brand. No third-party branding. No distraction from the experience you built.

The viewer is not a barrier. It is where the value lives.

Two fundamentals determine whether your base image triggers reliably.

The first is complexity. An image dense with color variation and detail is like a fingerprint, no two are alike. That uniqueness is what the Spatial Mods viewer locks onto when scanning. The more visually rich the image, the more reliably it triggers.

The second is background. Blank or minimal backgrounds give the viewer little to recognize. If your design allows for it, avoid large areas of flat color or empty space.

Most existing print materials, packaging, posters, and brochures already meet both criteria naturally. If you are designing a base image from scratch, lead with visual richness and your trigger will take care of itself.

Any real-world object or printed material can carry a Spatial Mod. Business cards, brochures, posters, packaging, and product labels all work. If you already have printed materials, you already have a canvas.

Universal Icons tell your audience the material is scan-able before they ever raise their phone. Download the free icon set and print them as stickers for existing materials, or send the image files to your designer or print shop to incorporate them into new designs.

No. Video is the most common format but not the only option. A Spatial Mods campaign can link to a website or social media profile instead. The trigger image and the viewer remain the same. What your audience experiences on the other side is your choice.

Spatial Mods works exclusively with video files, MP4 and MOV. No AR, VR, or 3D file formats are required. If you are working with those formats elsewhere and want to bring that content into Spatial Mods, export it as an MP4 or MOV and the platform will handle the rest.

Augmented reality is defined by the relationship between a digital experience and the real world. Without a real world object to scan, no video playback is possible. That dependency is precisely what makes Spatial Mods an AR platform.

The video is the experience. The printed material, packaging, poster, or product is the trigger. One cannot exist without the other. When your audience points the Spatial Mods viewer at your image and content appears, they are not watching a video. They are watching the physical world come to life.

The simplicity of the format is a feature, not a limitation. AR does not require complexity to be AR. It requires a real world trigger and a digital response. Spatial Mods delivers both.

Moving beyond the use of standard QR codes is the first step. AR experiences suffer from a simple problem: audiences don’t know what they’re getting before they scan. That uncertainty kills engagement before it starts.

The solution is a standardized visual vocabulary, the same way a play button means video and a shopping cart means purchase.

Modern AR no longer requires QR codes. Any detailed image can trigger an experience, freeing brands to prioritize design while the icons handle communication. Download a free starter set of Universal Icons.

Beyond QR

When a viewer points their phone at an AR-enabled poster, the image becomes a trigger. Video, animation, and interactive content layer directly onto the physical world through their camera.

The design principles are straightforward. Keep the poster clean and visually direct. The AR content must extend the message, not compete with it. Strong image contrast helps recognition. The experience should feel like a natural continuation of what the poster already communicates.

With Spatial Mods, any sufficiently detailed image can serve as the trigger. Your existing print materials are already closer to AR-ready than you think.

Transform Your Trade Show Presence

Trade show presence has always been measured by booth size and production budget. AR changes that equation entirely.

A banner, poster, or tabletop display becomes a portal to immersive brand experiences, powered by the device every attendee already carries. Innovative engagement now fits in a travel tube. No freight, no rigging, no production crew.

When someone stops to scan your display, they are self-selecting as a qualified prospect. Your team sees it happen in real time, creating a natural opening for conversations that matter. Analytics run in the background while the experience runs itself.

Content updates remotely between shows. No reprints. No downtime. Just a consistently fresh experience at every touchpoint. While others compete on booth size, you compete on innovation.

Transform Your Trade Show Presence

Archived video content is an underutilized asset. Classic commercials, behind-the-scenes footage, and vintage campaigns sit dormant in brand vaults worldwide, generating zero return. That changes with AR.

Spatial Mods transforms existing IP into compelling AR experiences that feel both classic and contemporary. Vintage becomes cutting edge. Nostalgia becomes novelty. Forgotten content becomes unforgettable engagement.

Your IP Archive Is a Goldmine

Green screen is the entry point. The same technique weather forecasters use every day becomes your tool for placing subjects into any environment, or directly into the viewer’s real world through their phone camera. A piece of green fabric, even lighting, and free editing software are all you need to start.

The two elements that matter most are clean edges and consistent lighting. Get those right and the result looks professional regardless of what equipment you used to shoot it.

Green Screen Magic

Delete the current campaign. Create a new campaign using the same base image and load your updated video. The Spatial Mods servers will update within minutes. No reprints. No downtime. Your printed materials stay exactly as they are.
